Orangutans can help each other get food by trading tokens, scientists have discovered - but only if the help goes in both directions.
Researchers from the University of St Andrews found orangutans could learn the value of tokens and trade them, helping each other win bananas.

Test reveals dogs' jealous side

Scientists in Austria say they have found a basic form of jealousy in dogs. The Vienna-based researchers showed that dogs will stop doing a simple task when not rewarded if another dog, which continues to be rewarded, is present.
Writing in the journal PNAS, the scientists say this shows a sensitivity in dogs that was only previously found in primates. Read more...

Σκοπός του να παρουσιάζει ζητήματα βιοηθικής ή επιστημονικά νέα που απασχολούν τη διεθνή επικαιρότητα και δεν προβάλλονται σε ελληνικά μέσα ενημέρωσης ευρείας κυκλοφορίας. Επίσης περιλαμβάνει νέα για τη δραστηριότητα της Επιτροπής, ενημέρωση για συνέδρια ή άλλες εκδηλώσεις με θέμα σχετικό με τη βιοηθική στην Ελλάδα και το εξωτερικό και τέλος παρουσιάσεις βιβλίων.

WORLDWIDE FUR FREE FRIDAY - NOVEMBER, 28 2008

The Anti-Fur Coalition has decided to create a new international event to be held together with Fur Free Friday (FFF) in the USA. Fur Free Friday is an anti-fur event which is always held on the Friday after Thanksgiving, which is the country’s busiest shopping day before Christmas.
International Anti-Fur Coalition have, therefore, not only adhered to Fur Free Friday, but also made it an international event and as such named it: Worldwide Fur Free Friday (WFFF).
On this day, more than 100 anti-fur simultaneous demos will be held worldwide. Please check if an action is planed closed to you.

Classical music soothes the wanderlust of zoo elephants

The rousing, patriotic sweep of Elgar's Nimrod, the mournful tones of Nessun Dorma and the urgent eight-note allegro con brio opening to Beethoven's fifth – they have all been helping animal behaviour experts to make life more comfortable for the elephants at Belfast zoo.

The researchers have discovered that playing classical music to the animals reduces abnormal behaviours such as swaying, pacing and trunk tossing, although they said elephants don't seem to have a favourite composer.

Cacophony of ocean noise killing whales

Underwater cacophony caused by commercial and military ships has become so intense that it is killing whales, according to scientists at the World Conservation Congress in Barcelona, Spain.

Bιντεοσκοπήθηκε το ψάρι που ζει στο πιο βαθύ σημείο του ωκεανού

Μια Αγγλοϊαπωνική ερευνητική ομάδα ανακάλυψε το ψάρι που ζει στα πιο βαθιά σημεία του ωκεανού, σε βάθος 7.7km (4,8 μίλια), στην τάφρο μεταξύ Ιαπωνίας και Ειρηνικού - και κατάφερε να το βιντεοσκοπήσει.
Ο καθηγητής Monty Priede, του Πανεπιστημίου του Aberdeen ανέφερε ότι το ψάρι αυτό ονομάζεται «Pseudoliparis Αmblystomopsis» και φτάνει μέχρι 30 πόντους μήκος (12 in). Κανένας δεν έχει φτάσει μέχρι στιγμής σε τέτοιο βάθος και οι επιστήμονες πιστεύουν ότι υπάρχουν ψάρια και σε ακόμη πιο βαθιά σημεία του ωκεανού. Ζουν σε αγέλες και κινούνται περίπου όπως οι γαρίδες.

Το μέχρι στιγμής ρεκόρ ανήκε στο ψάρι «Galatheae Abyssobrotula» το οποίο βιντεοσκοπήθηκε στην τάφρο του Puerto Rico και σε βάθος περίπου 8km (5 μίλια) το 1970, αλλά ήταν νεκρό!

Military penguin becomes a 'Sir'

A penguin who was previously made a Colonel-in-Chief of the Norwegian Army has been knighted at Edinburgh Zoo. Penguin Nils Olav has been an honorary member and mascot of the Norwegian King's Guard since the 1972. Αρχικά-εισαγωγικά είναι σημαντικό να δούμε πού διαφέρει η παραδοσιακή από την οικολογική ηθική. Η παραδοσιακή ηθική είναι ανθρωποκεντρική. Ο άνθρωπος ως σκοπός αναγνωρίζει στα άλλα όντα σχετική μόνο αξία, ανάλογα με τη χρησιμότητα που έχουν γι’αυτόν. Δεοντολογικά, με την οικολογική ηθική αναγνωρίζεται εγγενής,απόλυτη αξία στο περιβάλλον καί τα άλλα όντα εκτός από τον άνθρωπο. Για παράδειγμα το να σκοτώνει ο άνθρωπος ζώα από χόμπυ ή για σπορ όντας μόνο μια μικρή ομάδα στο φυσικό γίγνεσθαι, είναι ανήθικο, εφόσον και άνθρωπος και ζώο αντλούν την αξία τους από τη βιοτική κοινότητα και η επίγνωση δε στοιχειοθετεί ηθική πράξη.

Η οικολογική κρίση που βιώνουμε, αποτελεί ένα από τα μείζονα προβλήματα του αιώνα που διανύουμε και πυροδοτεί έντονες αντιπαραθέσεις σε πολιτικό, κομματικό, επιστημονικό αλλά κι επιχειρηματικό επίπεδο. Για το γόνιμο όμως διάλογο και την ουσιαστική αντιμετώπιση της, είναι σημαντικό να αποσαφηνιστούν οι φιλοσοφικές βάσεις του προβλήματος και να επιχειρηθεί η θεμελίωση της θεωρίας στην πράξη.
Ο Murray Bookchin, αναζητά τις βαθιές αιτίες της οικολογικής κρίσης στις κοινωνικές δομές και κατασκευάζει ένα θεωρητικό μοντέλο κοινωνικής οργάνωσης, του οποίου προτείνει την πολιτική εφαρμογή.

Spanish parliament to extend rights to apes

MADRID (Reuters) - Spain's parliament voiced its support on Wednesday for the rights of great apes to life and freedom in what will apparently be the first time any national legislature has called for such rights for non-humans.
Parliament's environmental committee approved resolutions urging Spain to comply with the Great Apes Project, devised by scientists and philosophers who say our closest genetic relatives deserve rights hitherto limited to humans. Read more...

Palin said the state will file a lawsuit in U.S. District Court in Washington challenging U.S. Interior Secretary Dirk Kempthorne's decision to grant Endangered Species Act protections to the polar bear. Animal Protection Groups Stand Up to Cruel Cormorant Killing

The cormorants of Middle Island in Canada's Point Pelee National Park have now become a target of the very agency charged with protecting them. Parks Canada plans to shoot and kill thousands of Middle Island's naturally occurring cormorant population in a cruel, misguided effort to protect the island's ecology. Parks Canada claims that the cull is necessary to save the island's vegetation, but cormorants play an important role in the natural process of regenerating the island's ever-evolving flora. Seal Defenders Of Sea Shepherd Attacked!

At 12/04/2008 the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society vessel Farley Mowat was attacked by officers from two Canadian Coast Guard icebreakers. Whale Killers Convicted for Killing Gray Whale

One of the Makah tribes most prominent whale killers has been found guilty of unlawfully killing a California Gray whale near Cape Flattery in Washington State. Wayne Johnson is the captain of the Makah Whaling crew and in August of 2007, he and four other Makah whalers unlawfully harpooned and shot a whale close to shore. The whale took over 10 hours to die and then sank unrecovered in the Pacific. Read more...

State officials given OK to kill sea lions to protect salmon

Oregon and Washington state officials will have the authority to trap and, if necessary, kill up to 85 of the sea lions that gobble up threatened salmon at the Columbia River's Bonneville Dam, the National Marine Fisheries Service announced last week. Sea lions, which enjoy a robust population but are nonetheless protected under the 1972 Marine Mammals Protection Act, have for years been visiting the dam to feast on salmon. State officials first must try to trap the animals and see whether an aquarium, zoo, or marine park will take them; if no facilities are available, or if the animals avoid entrapment, the sea lions can be killed. Critics of the plan say that not enough attention has been paid to the threats posed to salmon by fisherfolk, habitat loss, birds, water pollution, and dams.

EU considering steps on seal hunt

Spokeswoman Barbara Helfferich said the EU's Environment Commissioner Stavros Dimas "is looking into the matter of the inhumane killing of seals". Βάναυση δολοφονική επίθεση κατά του Sea Shepherd

Στις 7 Μαρτίου, oι ακτιβιστές του πληρώματος της Sea Shepherd δέχτηκαν χειροβομβίδες κρότου - λάμψης, με αποτέλεσμα να τραυμαυτιστούν τρεις από αυτούς, ενώ μια σφαίρα βρήκε τον αρχηγό του πληρώματος Paul Watson στο στήθος, ο οποίος ευτυχώς φόραγε αλεξίσφαιρο γιλέκο.

Drawing on animal ethological studies, this article considers the possibility of a form of morality existing in animals and its relationship with human morality. Given this capacity, I argue that first we need to reflect more carefully on human sin and evil in evolutionary terms. Second, I question the adequacy of the traditional divide between "moral" and "natural" evil as well as consider the possibility of anthropogenic evil. Third, I suggest that a theological response to nonhuman morality should include discussion of the atonement, but traditional categories prove inadequate. Fourth, drawing on Sergii Bulgakov, I explore the idea of shadow sophia as representing a multivocal theodicy that is capable of holding together a tapestry of different theological responses to evil. Finally, I discuss the redemption of nature in the light of the foregoing discussion.
